Do you have a digital spiritual practice?
New moon social media musings and magic... Your guide to a new age of social media 🦄
Recently, my friend Kimberly Jones was a guest on my show for the Chi Time Collective on UK Health Radio.
We talked about managing and protecting our energy while in the digital dimension. It is beautiful and nourishing to speak to this, as I know it's going to become even more important to protect our energy online and develop a digital spiritual practice in the next few years, particularly with the potential rise of the Metaverse and everything that means for us.Â
Kimberly works with women to reclaim their power, reconnect their magic, and come home to their bodies. Because she’s an empath, who has a history with chronic fatigue, Kimberly takes extra care to protect and clear her energy after spending time online.
It's a daily practice, especially in today's modern technological world, to keep coming back to my breath, back to my body, noticing when I'm beyond my capacity, what my body's own language is.
I asked Kimberly if being online calls on a lot of energy from her.
It does. In my experiences, it pulls me away from myself if I'm not cultivating a kind of a groundedness in my body. If I'm not in touch with that when I'm offline, it's much easier when I'm online to get sucked down every rabbit hole and lose sight of when I've stretched beyond my limits and my capacity … if I'm not tending to that, then my experience of being online is a minefield, and I'm super sensitive so it's really exaggerated. If I get sucked in and spend too long online, it can take me down, can take me out for days.
I’ve spoken recently about emotional contagion and how that can affect us through social media, how it's not just the information, it's also the emotion behind what others are sharing as well. This is where it becomes even more important to guard yourself online, psychically and spiritually as well as emotionally. One of the first things you should do is to ground yourself and come back into your body after spending any amount of time flying about in the digital dimension.
There are universal practices like getting out in nature if you can, or just going barefoot. If you haven't got a bath, stick your feet in a bowl of saltwater. If you haven't got a garden, gaze out of the window at the sky, or sit with a plant. Lay down and breathe, or put some music on and dance around. Dry brush your legs or massage your feet with oils. Something that just puts you back in touch with the floor beneath you and the edges of your body.
While those are all fantastic physical ways to ground your energy, there are also a number of digital spiritual practices you can do around protecting your energy online.
Here are a few of Kimberly’s favourite ways to clear her digital energy:
Cord clearing or a shower, imagining that light coming down from Source and rinsing over and through you, clearing and cleaning as it goes.
Call on whatever works for you: God, Goddess, guides, angels, Archangel Michael, divine spirit. Call on that assistance to clear cords, ties, links, and connections between you and any other person, place, time, and spirit dimension that's not for your highest good or greatest joy now. Trust that it's happening with no effort required.
Imagine beautiful, golden, rainbow orbs around your computer and phone, protecting your energy field.
Use smoke, crystals, sound, chimes and tuning forks to give everything a cleanse every day.
In addition to clearing, it’s vital that we remember to pause, to sign off and shut down for a bit. It’s important to remember we are not machines. We can't just go, go, go and keep running all the time. Even my laptop needs to power down and have a little rest. Otherwise, it starts whirring and the fan starts going!
As I was preparing to release my latest book, I had six weeks of really intense work and then decided to just release it as it was ready. I was starting to get into that edge of overwhelm, into a bit of burnout. So I had to stop, recenter, breathe, and be in my body.
We're not taught this from an early age. We're not taught this at school. We're not taught this by our parents. It's just not part of our culture to put your capacity, your nervous system capacity, your energy, your wellbeing first.
I asked Kimberly how we can recognise when we need to slow down, to conserve and protect our energy.
Sensation … taking time to do a body scan and just check in … from the top of your head down to the tips of your toes, and notice sensations that maybe feel uneasy or uncomfortable. They can be very subtle, or it can be a migraine coming on. It can be a pain that just won't go away. This is your body trying to tell you that you've reached your capacity, and it's time to dial it back in some way and let your body lead you.
And then what would be the next step to take once you've recognised those feelings inside the body?
I start breathing into that place. I take a couple of breaths into that place or place my hands lovingly onto that and say, 'I'm listening. Okay. You've got my attention … What do I need to know? Where am I over-giving, where am I over-pushing? How can I come back to myself?' … I would invite people to be kind to themselves, maybe hold yourself, stroke that place, breathe into that place and just say, 'I'm listening. Tell me what I need to know.'
I’m super grateful to have Kimberly in my life, and it was her 50th birthday this week, so it is even more special to celebrate her, and to share this wisdom and medicine with you all.
You can listen to the interview in full here.
I’d love to hear if you have any spiritual or energy clearing practices for your energy in the online space.Â
Join me in May for a Digital Energy Clearing session in my digital living room, Social Media For A New Age SPACE - next week on May 4th at 4pm GMT - access to SPACE is free for the first month so if you would like to join us for this you can sign up here.
Wishing you so much new moon love and Beltane blessings from Avalon,Â

We use social media to keep in touch with our loved ones, to follow the news, to educate and to inspire each other as well as to promote ourselves and our businesses. While this all sounds like a good thing, the potential for burnout and overwhelm is huge.
